Digital health experts will gather in Kuopio on April 2019 as part of Kuopio University Hospital 60th anniversary celebration

Telehealth, artificial intelligence and data lakes are part of future digital social and health care services. National and international experiences on these and many other digital health topics will be discussed at the two-day eHealth2019 conference held at the Kuopio University Hospital (KUH) from 2nd to 3rd April 2019 as part of the KUH’s 60th anniversary celebration.

Kuopio University Hospital (KUH) is strongly developing tertiary care medical center. Its activities are based on high quality, effectiveness and skilled specialists promoting the best for the patients. KUH was established in the late 50s as a part of national hospital network. Medical school started at Kuopio University by 1970s and this strengthened KUH´s position as one of the five University Hospitals in Finland. By gaining the University Hospital status KUH broadened the scope of health science research and began to train health care personnel. At the moment there almost 40 different medical specialties at KUH. KUH is known worldwide for example for being a topclass epilepsy center and forerunner of gene therapy. Digitalisation is taking quantum leaps as a major part of comprehensive care processes.

Over 40 lecturers around the world

Jointly with eHealth2019 Conference, FSTeH’s annual conference, the 24th Finnish National Conference on Telemedicine and eHealth is organized.  President of the FSTeH Arto Holopainen and Chief Innovation Officer of City of Kuopio, is pleased with that the event is organized in his hometown of Kuopio, ”Kuopio and Savilahti as a center of excellence offer an excellent environment for organizing an international conference”.

eHealth2019 offers program for social and health care professionals as well as to service providers and researchers in eHealth area. “Practical examples and experiences are shared by more than 40 lecturers from Finland and abroad,” says Holopainen. The conference opening keynote is given by the industry's top expert Lucien Engelen from the Netherlands on the conference main theme of data-driven health. Similarly, the closing keynote is given by artificial intelligence researcher, Professor Timo Honkela with a visionary lecture of enhanced health expertise through artificial intelligence.
 
Eight different site-visits

Conference includes eight different site-visits offering unique possibility to get hands-on experiences in solutions for the better and effective healthcare. As an example site visit to Microsurgery Centre of Eastern Finland at Kuopio University Hospital offers knowledge to unique 24/7 open and permanent place where the surgeons and other operating room staff can regularly practice hands on training and different surgical techniques in an artificial environment.

Similarly, site visit to the City of Kuopio’s elder-friendly environment Mäntykampus, provides an insight into how urban services can serve as an innovation platform, Living Lab, for new customer-oriented products and services. “Mäntykampus has also been selected as a reference site for European partnership for active and healthy aging (EIP AHA),” says Holopainen.

Other site visits are Emergency Services College's Training Ground, KCT Kuopio Center for Gene and Cell Therapy, University of Eastern Finland HUMEA laboratory, Savonia University of Applied Sciences: Applied Wellbeing Technology, Kuopio University Hospital; smart medicine cabinets and PET radiopharmacy and medicine storage automation for pharmacies.

Unique meeting place for top experts

The conference brings together top experts, researchers, large and small companies both regionally, nationally and internationally; decision-makers from both the public and private sectors and, of course, start-ups and young future healthcare professionals. “We challenge companies to present the latest innovations and future solutions at the conference exhibition,” Holopainen challenges.

Conference will contribute 10 hours of theoretical training for Finnish physicians’ and dentists’ special competence for healthcare information technology. It will also contribute 5-10 hours (depending on medical speciality) of theoretical training in the specialist training for Finnish physicians (Acceptance applied from University of Oulu). eHealth2019 Conference is the main event for the Kuopio Health Week, from 29 March to 4 April 2019,  during which several interconnected health events will be organized.
